Method

  1. 1 Heat a heavy-bottomed kadai and add 2 tablespoons of ghee, letting it melt until it shimmers.
  2. 2 Add the ragi flour and roast on a low flame for about 8-10 minutes until the raw smell vanishes and it turns a deep chocolate brown.
  3. 3 While the flour roasts, mash the bananas in a separate bowl until they are a smooth, lump-free puree.
  4. 4 Mix the mashed bananas and jaggery into the roasted flour, stirring vigorously until the mixture starts to leave the sides of the pan.
  5. 5 Add the remaining ghee, cashew powder, and cardamom; stir until the aroma fills your kitchen and the dough feels soft but not sticky.
  6. 6 Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool just enough so you can handle it comfortably.
  7. 7 Grease your palms with a drop of ghee and roll small, walnut-sized balls while the mixture is still slightly warm.
  8. 8 Allow the ladoos to firm up completely on a steel plate before storing them away.

Tips for Parents

Bone Building

Ragi provides essential calcium for your toddler’s rapidly growing bones.

Iron Boost

Natural iron from ragi and jaggery helps maintain healthy haemoglobin levels.

Easy Digestion

High dietary fibre from bananas helps keep toddler tummy troubles away.

Natural Sweetness

Uses ripe fruit and jaggery instead of refined white sugar.

Parent tip: If your toddler is going through a ‘no-texture’ phase, ensure the bananas are blended smooth rather than mashed. These ladoos are soft enough for little molars to mash easily, reducing any choking anxiety for you.
Storage: Store these in a clean, airtight steel dabba at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the fridge for 7 days. If refrigerated, let them sit out for 20 minutes before serving to regain their soft, fudgy texture.

Indian Variations

  • Maharashtrian style: Add a tablespoon of roasted poppy seeds (khus khus) for extra crunch.
  • South Indian: Swap cashew powder with grated dry coconut (kopra) for a tropical depth.
  • North Indian: Use a pinch of nutmeg powder alongside cardamom to support better sleep.
