Method

  1. 1 Soak the washed dal and rice together in clean water for at least 30 minutes to ensure they cook to a buttery softness.
  2. 2 Drain the soaking water and place the mixture into a small pressure cooker with 1.5 cups of fresh water.
  3. 3 Stir in the turmeric and cumin powder until the water turns a bright, sunny yellow.
  4. 4 Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles on medium heat until the grains are completely mushy and fall apart when touched.
  5. 5 Once the pressure releases naturally, mash the khichdi with the back of a steel spoon until it is a smooth, velvety puree.
  6. 6 Drizzle a teaspoon of warm ghee over the top and stir until it melts into the khichdi, releasing a nutty aroma.
  7. 7 Test the temperature on your inner wrist; it should feel comfortably warm, like a gentle bath, before feeding baby.

Tips for Parents

Natural Iron Boost

Moong dal provides essential iron for your baby’s developing brain and blood.

Easy on Tummies

The combination of soaking and cumin makes this meal very easy to digest.

Ghee for Growth

Ghee helps in the absorption of vitamins and provides energy for milestones.

Texture Transition

Mashing with a spoon helps baby get used to soft solids safely.

Parent tip: If your little one pushes the spoon away, don’t worry; they are just learning how to move their tongue. Try thinning the khichdi with a little warm water or expressed breast milk to make the transition from liquids easier.
Storage: Store leftovers in a small stainless steel or glass airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Reheat thoroughly in a double boiler rather than a microwave to avoid hot spots that could burn baby’s mouth.

Indian Variations

  • South Indian: Add a few mashed curry leaves for aroma and swap rice with Ponni rice.
  • Gujarati: Add a tiny piece of mashed boiled carrot for a hint of natural sweetness.
  • Bengali: Use Gobindobhog rice for its unique fragrance and add a drop of mustard oil instead of ghee for older babies.
